HGBCS Elementary School Enrichment Opportunities

HGBCS elementary school offers several enrichment opportunities for our students. Our goal is to challenge our students to strive first for God’s Kingdom and use all the abilities He has blessed them with to bring Him glory and honor.

Mentoring/Tutoring Program: Elementary students are paired with high school students to help enrich their lives through academics and social peer tutoring. Students are recommended for the program by their teacher.
Bible Drill: Students in 4th and 5th grade participate in a school Bible drill. They memorize 25 verses, key passages and the books of the Bible, along with their normal weekly scripture memory. We feel this allows yet another opportunity for them to hide God’s Word in their heart and grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord.
10 Commandment Campaign: Students learn and discuss the 10 commandments during their class time and then go out into the community with their families and use the commandments as a witnessing tool.
DARE:  DARE is an exciting program for 5th graders. They will learn to recognize and resist pressures that may influence them to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, inhalants, or other drugs. They will also learn how violence hurts everyone.
Duke Tips Program:  This program is sponsored through Duke University. It recognizes students who excel academically in certain areas from the 4th and 5th grades. Information from the previous years, Stanford 10 or Otis Lennon is used to determine those who are invited to participate.  Parents are given the information and may choose to be a part of the program.
ACSI Events: ASCI offers spelling bee and math Olympics for students who excel in these areas.  HGBCS is represented by a group of talented students in both of the areas.  They compete against other schools.
Field Trips:

All of the classes take numerous field trips throughout the school year.  They will enrich the subject matter that is being taught in their classrooms. 4th grade takes a trip to Raleigh each year to enhance North Carolina History.
