skills necessary to compete at that level.
Tryout Myths: |
|
|
|
|
Goal: Choose the best players that you feel give you the best chance to compete.
Cuts
*Cuts will be made on every team
*Coaches and AD set the roster number (no set number)
*Coaches will be as sensitive as they can to all students who tryout and are cut
*Younger kids are at a disadvantage
- Defined: at this time, I feel that you are not ready to compete at this level.
- How to Handle the Cut Situation
- Prepare your child in advance
- Encourage them to do their best
- Let your child know that your love is not based on athletic performance
- Encourage child to keep pursuing improvement in sport
- You don’t take cut personally
- Get over it (your kids will too!)
- Guard your comments toward school around your kids
Hickory Grove Athletic Philosophy
- Core Values
- Coaches want to help students
- NOT a Recreation Program
- Winning is Important
Lions to Cubs Mentoring Program
The Varsity Football Team and the Varsity Cheerleaders have been participating in a mentoring program with the Elementary classrooms of Hickory Grove. The Lions to Cubs Program is designed to introduce our elementary students to the sports program of our school and to give them an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of our athletes. This program was designed to help connect the Athletic Program to the academic program, and also to connect the two schools. The hope is that the students will learn from our athletes, and our athletes will realize that they are being watched and they can be positive role models to other students.
The athletes visit the classrooms during the week of all home games. They promote the upcoming game, and talk about a topic that the class can identify and learn about. On October 1, the athletes shared something that happened to them when they were in that grade. Homecoming week they will be sharing why they love Hickory Grove. In the coming weeks, the athletes will be sharing why God is important to them and a topic that the elementary teacher would like them to talk to the class about.
The classes are asked to pray for their athletes and are invited to come to the games and support them. We hope that all involved will learn something and that the elementary students will get excited about growing up at Hickory Grove and becoming a Hickory Grove Lion!
