Varsity Men's Basketball Game Results/Summaries


Hickory Grove Christian 78  vs.  Wesleyan High Point 74

Hickory Grove pulled a home victory Tuesday night against 3A opponent Wesleyan High Point. After losing double digit lead from the first half, the Lions found themselves down 5 points with 5 minutes to play. The Lions rallied behind Nick Trull’s 15 fourth quarter points to storm back and take the lead. The Lions committed no turnovers and hit eight strait free throws down the stretch to pull out the important win. This win helps the Lions solidify their chances at getting a state birth an will greatly help in the seeding. Nick Trull finished with 33 points and freshman Marcus Burton had 17 points in his first start of the year.

Hickory Grove Christian 77  vs.  Durham Academy  62      1/4/08
The Lions jumped out to an early lead with some tough defense from Nick Trull, Corey Davis, and Evan Shelton.  The Lions used that defense to get some easy transition points, scoring 52 point in the first half to Durham’s 37.  The Lions lost the third quarter 16-8 but won the forth quarter 17-9, for the 77-62 win.

Senior Nick Trull was named to the five player all tournament team despite the team finishing 6th.  Nick scored 91 points during the Shootout.

N. Raleigh Christian @ Hickory Grove Christian  12/1

Lions fell behind early with the N. Raleigh hitting 10 three pointers in the first half.  The Lions had a 17 point deficit going into halftime, 28-45.  The Lions came out stronger in the second half cutting the lead to 11 by the start of the fourth quarter.  The team turned up the defensive pressure and caused 7 steals in the final quarter to help outscore the visiting Knights 26-5 in the final quarter and win the game 73-63.  The Lions were led by Senior Nick Trull’s 30 points, 8 steals, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.  Corey Davis put up a strong performance with 23 points and 7 rebounds.  Lee Branscome chipped in 13 points and Tim Watts added 6 assists.  


Hickory Grove Christian @ Charlotte Catholic 12/04

The Lions took the lead early in the second quarter from a disciplined Catholic team, and led 27-20 at half.  Playing tough defense and grabbing defensive rebounds, the Lions pushed the lead to as many as 17 in the second half. Poor free throw shooting made the lead 12 at the end of the game.  Senior Tim Watts controlled the game from start to finish making many nice plays and finishing with 8 assists, 9 rebounds,  6 points and only 3 turnovers.  Nick Trull put in 20 points followed by Corey Davis with 17.

Country Day @ Hickory Grove Christian  11/27

The visiting Buc’s took the lead early and continued to trade baskets with the Lions throughout the first half.  The 6 point halftime lead was erased during the third quarter as the Lions had the game tied with 4 minutes to go in the third quarter.  But, the Buc’s were too strong in the end, winning the game 70-61.

Hickory Grove Christian 57 @ Christ School 93  11/16/07

The Lions were outmatched from the beginning, falling behind early 29-15.  Christ school has 7 division one recruits on their roster including the 6’11, 6’9, and 6’9 Plumbee brothers.  The Lions cut the lead to 8 during the second quarter, but were never able to get closer.  The Lions were led by Nick Trull with 16 points and Tim Watts with 5 assists.


Hickory Grove Christain 75 @ Ashville School 40  11/17/07

The Lions jumped on Ashville School early and led 41-19 at halftime.  The Lions pressure defense forced many turnovers and led to easy baskets for Nick Trull (24 points) and Marcus Burton (12 points).  Evan Shelton blocked 6 shots, Lee Branscome chipped in 16 points, Corey Davis grabbed 10 rebounds, and Tim Watts dished out 11 assists.


Hickory Grove Christian 70 @ Gaston Christian 49

Corey Davis started the game with an emphatic dunk, but, Gaston Christian kept the game close through the first half with tough energetic play.  The Lions couldn’t match their intensity, but led 33-25 at half.  Starting the second half the Lions picked up the pace on defense and extended the lead, winning the game 70-49.  The Lions were lead by Nick Trull, scoring 30 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists.  Corey Davis emerged as an inside presence with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
